Honoring the Legacy of the Sakada: Bridging Hawaii and the Philippines
The Hawaii–Philippines Pacific Bridges proudly shares the remarkable history of the Sakada — the first group of Filipino workers who journeyed to Hawaii in 1906 to work in sugar plantations. This initiative aims to raise awareness among Filipinos, especially Ilocanos, and Hawaiians about the enduring legacy of these pioneers who laid the foundation for the vibrant Filipino community in Hawaii today.
The Sakadas embodied courage, perseverance, and hope. Leaving their homeland in search of better opportunities, they carried with them not just their skills but also their rich culture, language, and traditions — all of which continue to shape Hawaii’s multicultural identity.
Through this awareness campaign, Hawaii–Philippines Pacific Bridges seeks to honor their sacrifices, preserve their stories, and strengthen the cultural ties between Hawaii and the Philippines. By remembering the Sakada journey, we celebrate the shared values of resilience, hard work, and unity that continue to connect our two island communities across generations.
Together, let us keep the Sakada spirit alive — a true bridge between two island paradises, one shared heritage.

In close coordination with government authorities, including the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Philippine Consulate in Honolulu, the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and the Local Government Units (LGUs) led by their respective Governors, the Pacific Bridges Initiative works to maintain a secure and welcoming environment for all visitors. Through the guidance and support of these institutions, we ensure that every exchange, tour, and cultural activity is conducted with the highest regard for public safety, order, and the well-being of our guests. This partnership reflects our shared goal of promoting not only tourism and cultural exchange but also peace, trust, and cooperation between Hawaii and the Philippines.
